Three years ago, a book was published in Bulgaria. Nothing strange about that you might say, and I agree. But the book we’re talking about is none other than Shining in the Dark, edited by yours truly. This was the true first edition of the book and it was later followed by editions in the US, Italy, Czech Republic, Germany, Sweden, the UK, Serbia, Brazil, Japan and France. During 2021 it will also be released in Greece and at least one more country. 13 translations published in 26 different editions…and counting.
All this during a three-year period. Not bad if you ask me!
On September 2nd Japanese publisher Fusosha Publishing is releasing Shining in the Dark (闇のシャイニング リリヤの恐怖図書館) in Japan. Here is the cover! Order your copy here
Five years ago today (July 17, 2015) I got the OK from Stephen King to use The Blue Air Compressor in my anthology Shining in the Dark.
The book was created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Lilja’s Library back in 2016 but was delayed and first saw the light of day in 2017 in Bulgaria.
Then in 2018 it was released in the US, Italy, Czech Republic, Germany, Sweden and the UK.
In 2019 it was released on audio in both the US and the UK as well as a paperback editions in the US and Serbia.
This year (2020) it’s been released in Brazil, Sweden (paperback) and Bulgaria (audio) and before the year is over it’ll be out in both France and another (to be revealed) language.
In 2021 it will be out in Greece and as we speak negotiations are beign held for two more translations.
12 different langages in 23 different editions in 5 years...not bad. I want to take this opertunity to thank every one of you that has read the book. I couldn’t be more proud of it!
The book also contains stories by Jack Ketchum, P.D. Cacek, Stewart O'Nan, Bev Vincent, Clive Barker, Brian Keene, Richard Chizmar, Kevin Quigley, Ramsey Campbell, Edgar Allan Poe, Brian Freeman & John Ajvide Lindqvist.
Now Shining in the Dark is out as an eBook in Bulgaria through Storytel. You can listen to an excerpt of the introduction here and hear my Bulgarian voice…or the narrator who reads my introduction if you want to be picky…

Remember how I told you there would be a brand-new cover for the Swedish edition of Shining in the Dark (Varsel i Mörkret)? Well, it’s done and here is a teaser. The cover is (like the original US cover) done by Vincent Chong.
Great news about the UK edition of Shining in the Dark. This edition (only released in 350 copies) will not only be signed by me and artist Francois Vaillancourt as first announced. Five of the authors (Stewart O’Nan, Brian Keene, Richard Chizmar, Ramsey Campbell and Brian James Freeman) have also signed the book!
We’re now only 24 hours away from finishing the Kickstarter for the Swedish edition of Shining in the Dark, Varsel i Mörkret. But fear not, there are still a few copies left if you haven’t gotten yours yet. Just head over to the Kickstarter and one of the 666 copies can be yours.
But remember, there are only 24 hours left. After that, if there are copies left, the prize will be higher.
The Kickstarter for the Swedish edition of Shining in the Dark, Varsel i Mörkret, only has 71 hours left. At the moment we have collected 141% of the money we need to do the book so the book will be released (in September). What we try to do now is collect 200% of the money. If we do we’ll be able to release the book in hardback and with a new wonderful cover done by Vincent Chong that did the original cover. Just that will be worth buying the book for.
The Swedish edition will also include a brand new Brian Keene story. One that is so new that it’s not even done yet. Brian is working on it as we speak and it won’t be released anywhere else until 2019 at the earliest.
Also, if you don’t live in Sweden and still want the book it’s no problem. The book can be bought from everywhere in the world from this url! It will be a nice collectable, only released in 666 copies.
Oh, and if you’re thinking about getting the book, do it now because if you want until after the Kickstarter has ended, if there are even any copies left, they will be more expensive than they are now.
So, please help me reach the 200% goal. If you have already bought the book, please spread the word about it.
The Kickstarter I’m running to release Shining in the Dark in Sweden just reached 100%. The book will be released in September and the title will be Varsel i Mörkret.
Thank you all who made this possible!
Those of you who haven’t bought the book yet can do that here.
But that is not all. To celebrate this I’m happy to announce that Brian Keene (who has already written An End To All Things for the book) is, as we speak, writing a new short story, so new it dosn’t even have a title yet, that will be included in the Swedish edition of the book. This story will not appear anywhere else until next year...at the earliest.
On April 2nd a Kickstarter was launched to get Shining in the Dark translated into Swedish. I'm happy to be able to say that with 10 days left we have reached 79% of the needed amount. Thanks to everyone who has supported the Kickstarter.
But I need your help to finish the Kickstater with a BANG during it’s last week. All in all, I need 100,000 SEK (US$12,000) to do the book but I'm aiming higher. I want to collect twice that amount because then Vincent Chong who has done the original cover will do a new, unique cover for this edition. I will also be able to make it in hardcover and the way it deserves to be done.
So, if you haven't already, head over to the Kickstarter and support if you can. This will be a beautiful edition, only released in 666 copies and if you support it your name will be on the “Thank you” list in the book.
Here is a review of the Italian edition of Shining in the Dark. If anyone out there happens to see it in a bookstore, please take a photo and send it to me.
A week ago a Kickstarter was launched to get Shining in the Dark translated into Swedish. I'm happy to be able to annonce that after just a week we have already reached 50% of the needed amount. Thanks to everyone who has supported the Kickstarter.
But I need more help. All in all we need 100,000 SEK (US$12,000) to do the book (we how have a bit more than half of that). But I'm aiming higher. I want us to collect twice that amont because then Vincent Chong who has done the original cover will do a new, unic cover for this edition.
So, if you haven't already, head over to the Kickstarter and support if you can. This will be a beautiful edition and there will only be 666 copies made.
As you know (and if you didn’t you do now) I have been running a contest to celebrate Lilja’s Library’s 20-year anniversary. The winner will get a copy of the US edition of Shining in the Dark signed by me and Vincent Chong (I can add a personal note as well if you’d like me to). The ending of the contest has been delayed a few times due to the fact that the book itself has been delayed but now I have set a date for when I will draw a winner and that is Sunday April 15.
To enter I want you to send in a photo of yourself and Lilja’s Library. Lilja’s Library you might ask? Yes, take a photo of yourself and Lilja’s Library in some form. It could be you in front of the computer (where you can see Lilja’s Library), it could be a photo of you and my book, it could be a photo of you and your tattoo of Marv (if anyone has one), or any other form of Lilja’s Library. Draw Marv and pose with him, read the site on your phone and take a photo of yourself doing it…your imagination is the limit. The rule is that Lilja’s Library and you need to be in the photo (and not just a toe or a finger, your face at least). That’s it. Not to hard, right?
I will then draw the photo I like the best (what I like is for me to know and you to find out) as the winner. If you have already sent a photo and think: "darn I should have been more creative", then just send another one. As mentioned the prize is a copy of Shining in the Dark: Celebrating Twenty Years of Lilja’s Library.
You all know about Shining in the Dark by now. The anthology created to celebrate the 20 anniversary of Lilja’s Library. Now you have a chance to be part of its Swedish edition; Varsel i Mörkret!
When you make a pledge through the Kickstarter (live through April) you’re not only helping getting the book published in Swedish but you’ll also get your name included in the book. The book will be limited to 666 copies and no matter where you live you can be part of this exciting project.
So head over to the Kickstarter and help getting the book out in Sweden and even if you don’t understand Swedish this will be a great addition to you King Collection.
Here is an update from Cemetary Dance on the US edition of Shining in the Dark:
The books are finished at the printer, but we discovered a major problem when they sent us the final approval copies: the printer completely missed printing and tipping in the interior artwork drawn by Erin S Wells. It's too late for them to fix this, so instead we¹ve created an exclusive chapbook of the artwork that will ship with your book. We think they'll make this special edition even more special!

I’m back home from the trip to Sofia, Bulgaria where I promoted my book Shining in the Dark. I was there for almost three days and let me tell you, I had a blast! I arrived late Friday in Sofia, Bulgaria and was greeted by Vesela and Dimo from the publisher (Pleiad). They drove me to the hotel and being the darker time of the year, it was already dark out and it was hard to see what Sofia looked like. But I would get my chance during the coming days.
Saturday was the big day. A sunny Sofia greeted me and I arrived at Helikon just before 10 and after being introduced to a lot of nice people it was time to do a TV interview with Svetoslav Ivanov for bTV’s 120 minutes. It was done all in English so it was not that different to other interviews I have done. Svetoslav was very nice and easy to talk to so it went smooth.
Then it was time for the main event. The crowd was there, I was there, the moderator Asya Angelova was there and the interpreter Boya Delibaltova was there. I was introduced and that was when I really understood that this was going a lot different from what I’m used to. Not in a bad way but different. I realized that I didn’t understand a word of Asya’s introduction. The Bulgarian language is very different from both Swedish and English and I have to confess that I don’t understand one word. But Boya did a great job and translated for me. I then told the crowd about Lilja’s Library and the book; Shining in the Dark. This was followed by a Q&A session and a book signing and I really enjoyed talking to all everyone who had come there to check out my book.
This was then followed by interviews for Chetat li dvama and AzCheta.com, both in English.
After lunch, it was time for a radio interview with Georgi Mitov-Gemi for the show Knigi Zavinagi (Books Forever). My interview starts about 5 minutes into the show. This interview was also done with an interpreter and you actually hear more of her than me in the interview. This was also the only time during my visit that I tried to speak Bulgarian. Georgi asked me to say, “Hi this is Hans-Ake Lilja and your listening to Knigi Zavinagi”. After three tries Georgi was happy. I’m not sure if or where they used this clip though. Maybe it just ended up in the trash because to be honest I didn’t go a good job...
On Sunday, I meet with a bunch of Bulgarian bloggers for interviews. We drank coffee and had a great time. Talked about Stephen King, Shining in the Dark and the pros and cons of the movie versions of The Shining and the new version of IT. Sunday afternoon was spent sightseeing in Sofia. The nice weather continued and it was a nice afternoon.
On Monday before I left and traveled back to Sweden I was interviewed by Olya Stoyanova for the show Hristo Botev. This interview was on live radio so I was a bit nervous but I think I did a pretty good job. After that, my Bulgarian adventure was over and the only thing left was a 10-hour trip back to Sweden where I arrived late on Monday evening. Tired but extremely happy with my trip to Bulgaria. And for that I want to thank everyone who arranged the trip, the interview and the meeting with the readers of my book. You all know who you are and what you did and I’m not naming anyone and setting myself up to forget someone. And I also want to send a special thanks to Pleiad who started it all. Thanks!

Here is an interview I did for ETC Örebro about Stephen King and my book Shining in the Dark. It's in Swedish but I'm sure you can get the meaning of it with Google Translate.
One month from today I’ll be heading to Sofia, Bulgaria to promote Shining in the Dark and on January 6, 2018 I’ll be doing a book signing at 11:00 in Helikon-Vitosha. I hope to see you there.
As you know (and if you didn’t you do now) Lilja’s Library celebrated 20 years last year and I want to celebrate that as much as I can. And you also know that the site wouldn’t be worth anything if no one read it. So, in order to celebrate that I want to involve you.
I want to do something similar to the photos you send in with yourself and one of King’s books but this time I want you to send in a photo of yourself and Lilja’s Library. Draw Marv and pose with him, read the site on your phone and take a photo of you doing it…your imagination is the limit. The rule is that Lilja’s Library and you need to be in the photo (and not just a toe or a finger, your face at least). That’s it. Not to hard right?
And to make it even more fun, one of you that send in a photo will get a prize. I will draw the photo I like the best (what I like is for me to know and you to find out) as the winner. If you have already sent a photo and think: "darn I should have been more creative", then just send another one. The prize is a copy of my upcoming anthology Shining in the Dark: Celebrating Twenty Years of Lilja’s Library that's released later this year.
OK, so start sending in your photos, either by email to info[a]liljas-library.com or post them on facebook or twitter. I will then pull them from there and post them on the site.

I have just updated my page over at Goodreads, Head over there to check it out. You can give me tips on what to read, check out my books and what others think about them (or rate them yourself). You can even ask me a question if you so wish…
Shining in the Dark is now listed on my author page over at Amazon along with my other two books. They haven’t added the cover yet though but it’s there if you want to pre-order.
You can also follow me on Amazon (not sure what you get for doing that but please try it out).
Vincent Chong who’s done the beautiful cover for the book Shining in the Dark: Celebrating Twenty Years of Lilja’s Library has posted the backstory to the cover as well as some sketches he did for it. A very interesting look at how a cover was created. Check it out over at his site.
Finally, I can reveal what I have been teasing about for quite some time now. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Lilja’s Library Cemetery Dance will publish the anthology Shining in the Dark: Celebrating Twenty Years of Lilja’s Library.
The anthology will contain 12 stories by 13 great authors that I have selected. Six of the twelve stories have not been published anywhere (some are actually written with this book in mind) before this publication and of the six that have, most have only been published in magazines. So, chances are that you’ll read them here for the first time.
