Running A Website For 30 Years Just For The Fun Of It

Posted: June 14, 2026, 23:47
_
That is what I have done. Since 1996 I have run Lilja’s Library for fun. And for my love and interest in Stephen King’s books. When I created the site I created it for me, not for anyone else and not for a second did I think it would still be here 30 years later. Let’s look at the Internet back in 1996. It was all new and not very good. Because the connection was so slow there were almost no images to be found online, an image could take minutes to load. So, the sites that were there were mostly text. Some really cool ones had revolving skulls but that was it. When I found the Internet, I was 26 and a university student. I spent my time in the computer halls trying to find info about King’s books. At this time, you didn’t know about a new book until it was out in the stores and you ran into it. I know, it’s hard to believe but it’s true. Now the Internet came, and you could find info about books you didn’t even know existed quite easily. So, I searched and found a few pages about King and his work but not one that collected all the info in the same place, and I thought to myself, “OK, I’ll create a site and collect all the stuff there,” and I did.

At first it didn’t have a name but eventually people like me that wanted everything in the same place found the site and for reasons I have now forgotten I decided to call it Lilja’s Library – The World of Stephen King and something that changed my life was born.

Today I have run the site for more than half my life. I’ve done it because I enjoy it. I like to give all of you who follow me all the latest news. Today there are other pages that do the same, some of them are really good, some not so good. But the number of sites to choose from is far greater today than it was back in 1996. That’s for sure. Still, a lot of you keep coming back to my site for the latest King news and for that I’m very grateful. Because to be honest, today I do this for all of you out there that stop by the site, post a comment on some of my social media accounts thanking me for some news I just posted. For those of you that email me saying you were able to get your hands on your first signed King book because I posted about its release and for all of you that direct me to stuff that might become news on the site.

We all have something in common. We all love Stephen King’s books, and we all want to spread the word about them so that more people can find out how good they are and become fans like us. I have made so many friends from all over the world during these 30 years that I can hardly believe it’s true. Most of you I never get the chance to meet in person but a few I have met. I went to France to promote one of my books about King and met fans that hardly spoke a word of English. I don’t speak French, but we still connected. I went to Bulgaria and the Czech Republic and the same thing happened there. Amazing.

What about the future then? Well, so far this year has been a lot of fun. I have had contests, my followers on social media have increased a lot. On Facebook I now have over 120,000 followers, which sounds crazy when you say it out loud. It’s almost like a small city where everyone follows me. But everything must come to an end sometime, right? For a short time, I got the idea that 30 years was a good number of years to run a site and actually toyed with the idea of letting 2026 be the site’s last year. To have a countdown until December 31 and then call it quits. But then I realized that I had too much left to do. I’ve been invited to speak at KingCon 2026 in Atlantic City in October; I have a killer contest left to run and that is just a few things. So, the site will live on for a bit longer. Will it be here for 30 more years? Probably not since I would be 86 by then if I’m still alive. Will it be here for 10? I don’t know, maybe. I do know that as long as it’s active I will keep doing my best to deliver the latest news from Stephen King’s Kingdom. Oh, and I will give you one more promise. Lilja’s Library will always be free for everyone to access. I will never charge you anything for accessing the info on it. I might ask for a donation from time to time (if the expenses are running high) since I don't make any money from it now and never have.

So, thank you for your support, no matter if you’ve been with me for 30 years or one year. I hope you stick around and don’t be a stranger if we meet somewhere. Stop and say, “Hi.”

Thanks for all your support!

As you might (or not) know 2026 is the 30th anniversary of Lilja’s Library. I’m celebrating all year long with birthday wishes from friends and fellow King fans (if you want to send in a video I’d be happy to post it on the site) as well as contests. So far I have had 2 contests and soon it’s time for the third.

I haven't set a date or a format for it yet but I wanted to give you a taste of what you can win. Here is a sneak peek.

Hint: Here is a cropped photo showing parts of the important page in the book that you can win...

Even though the contest is in the future I do recommend you to follow my social medias ASAP to avoid missing out! I don’t think I have to tell you, you don’t want to miss out on this one, right?

We Have A Winner!

The second 30th Anniversary contest is over and we have a winner but first let’s check out the correct answer. The question was:

Name the three book series King has written that includes 3 or more books.

The correct answer should be:

The Dark Tower: 8 books
The Bill Hodges trilogy: 3 book
The Talisman trilogy: 3 books

Yes, The Talisman trilogy is included since the questions was “book series King has written” and the third book is written even if it’s not released yet.

Some of you answered The Gwendy trilogy but that isn’t correct since King was only part of book 1 and 3. Some of you also mentioned The Holly Gibney books and I admit that those can be seen as a series even if I se them more as books with the same character included but I have given right for that as well.

The Green Mile has also been mentioned but that is one book even if it was released in segments but that is not a series.

Unfortunately there were a lot of you that had the correct answer and was drawn but then didn’t include your address and was therefore (as stated on the contest page) disqualified. One that did get the right answers and included his address and is now the happy owner of a copy of the limited Firestarter is…

LEE MOORFOOT in Ohio

CONGRATULATIONS! the book is on the way!

Thanks to Overlook Connection for sponsoring the contest. They are also giving everyone 10% off on everyting on StephenkingCatalog.com if you enter the code LILYA10.

Long Days and Pleasant Nights — 30 Years Online

Lilja’s Library celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026. That means it first entered the Internet back in 1996. The Internet was still new, and most websites consisted of plain text, revolving skulls, and other “cool” effects. In the middle of it all, Lilja’s Library made its debut. Never in my life could I have imagined that, 30 years later, I would still be updating the site with all the latest news about King.

1996 was a great year to be a King fan. We received no fewer than three books that year, King’s 38th, 39th, and 40th releases. Now, thirty years later, he is publishing his 92nd book.

That year also gave us The Green Mile, released in six parts over six months, an experience that allowed fans to discuss the story together without anyone reading ahead and spoiling the ending. Each installment even came with its own screensaver for our computers. The only problem? Most of us didn’t even have a computer.

We also got the twin novels Desperation and The Regulators, the latter released under the Richard Bachman name. As you can see, 1996 wasn’t just a strong year in terms of quantity, it was also a year of experimentation. The Green Mile was published in serialized form, and Desperation and The Regulators were interconnected through their characters despite being published under different names. 1996 truly was a wonderfully experimental year for King. And Lilja’s Library entry was perfect timing.

There were also a few film releases. We got Thinner, based on Bachman’s novel of the same name, featuring King in a cameo as the pharmacist, Mr. Banghor. Additionally, two sequels were released, Sometimes They Come Back...Again and Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering, which, in all honesty, we might have managed without.

A lot has happened since those early days, but Lilja’s Library is still here. For that, I want to thank all of you who visit the site, comment on social media, write to me, and share my news.

Make sure you follow Lilja’s Library in whatever way works best for you. 2026 is a special year, and you won’t want to miss what’s coming. There are many fun things ahead throughout the year!
