Dolores Claiborne' debut in 'restrained' Opera season

The San Francisco Opera, still laboring to emerge from financial challenges, has announced what General Director David Gockley called a "fiscally restrained" schedule for its 2013-14 season.

The eight-production season, which runs from Sept. 6 through July 13, 2014, will include the world premiere of the previously announced "Dolores Claiborne," commissioned from composer Tobias Picker and librettist J.D. McClatchy, and the company premiere of Jerome Kern's "Show Boat." But the remainder of the season is devoted to familiar works of the Italian and German repertoire.
